Do not be afraid; only believe (Luke 8:50)
The Lord Jesus comforted Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue, when the latter received the news that his only daughter had just died. When Jairus came to the Lord, seeking His help, his child was still alive. Now everything seemed to be lost.
When anyone places a matter in the Lord's hands, it cannot be better placed. The Lord is faithful; He has only our good in mind. That is what Jairus experienced.
It may be that someone has entrusted the salvation of his soul and his eternal destiny to the Lord Jesus Christ and reckons in Him, but has no assurance of salvation. The above word of the Lord's applies to him, to; "Do not be afraid; only believe!"
We should like to remind readers of two other sayings of the Son of God that afford assurance and peace. "It is finished!" and "It is written!" (John 19:30; Luke 4:4).
The first of these sayings gives us security in view of the coming judgment, for "Christ died for our sins" (1 Corinthians 15:3). Redemption has indeed ben accomplished; the Son of God "died for the ungodly" (Romans 5"6). Moreover, Scripture states; "He who believes in him is not condemned" (John 3:18).
The second saying gives our hearts assurance. It shows us how Jesus Christ Himself trusted God's Word and His promises. His word is truth; so we can trust it, too. Nobody who rests on the Word of God will ever be disappointed.
Indeed, whoever has his eternal salvation founded on Christ and His Word stands on absolutely secure ground.
"Do not be afraid; only believe!"
